Bori
Sanctuary is situated in the Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR),
at Pachmarhi in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh.

inside the sanctuary for the increased population. Dhain
village is resettled in the summer of 2005 at the new
place and villagers are busy weaving their new life at
new place. However the success story has now spread in
other 16 villages....more
Bridging
the Gaps: Resettlement of Villages from TATR
Jayesh Paranjape & Indrapratap
Thakare.

The
Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve(TATR) comprises of the
Tadoba National Park and Andhari Sanctuary. Tadoba is
the oldest national park in the state, declared in 1955
(As per MP National Park Act 1955) and spread over
116.55 sq. km. The surrounding forest area of 508.85 sq.
km, on account of its wildlife potential, was declared
as the Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary in 1986. The combined
area was declared a Project Tiger Reserve in 1995. The
entire TATR area of 625.40 sq.km is divided into three
ranges; Tadoba, Kolasa and Moharli, for wildlife
management purpose.
There
are six villages in the Andhari sanctuary, namely
Botezari, Kolasa, Palasgaon, Rantalodi, Jamani and
Navegaon. Apart from these there are 59 other villages
situated on the periphery of the sanctuary with a
population of 41,644 humans and an equal number of
cattle.
The
Government of Maharashtra has decided to rehabilitate
the villages Kolasa, Botezari and Palasgaon in the first
phase, as per the Maharashtra Project Affected Peoples
Resettlement Act 1999. Among these three villages, the
people of Kolsa and Botezari are ready to move and are
waiting for the go ahead from the Govt. But the people
from Palasgaon are a bit reluctant to the relocation
process.
This
report is an outcome of the social survey conducted by
Satpuda Foundation, funded by Wildlife Conservation
Trust. The objective of the survey was to find out the
"site specific demands" of the villages going
to be shifted from TATR and compare those in
context of the "resettlement package",
declared by Govt of Maharashtra, finding out gaps, if
any, so that villagers really can achieve the
"development", they have dreamt. This report
has highlighted the additional facilities, villagers
have demanded, which can be made available to these villages,
apart from the given facilities in the declared
Government Package. However the report also emphasize on
the need to consider "these additional amenities as
supplementary to the declared Government package"
and should be provided once Government spend their
allotted funds and resources on the declared package.

Survey
of Wild Buffalo in Gadchiroli district.
 The
forest area near the tri-state boundaries of Maharashtra,
Chattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh is home to the last
habitat of the Central Indian wild buffalo. Less than a
hundred individuals of this species survive today, in
remote and inaccessible areas. The status of this
magnificent wild animal and its habitat needs to be
regularly monitored in order for appropriate
conservation measures to be instituted. A team from the
Satpuda Foundation visited the region and helped the
Maharashtra forest department formulate a proposal to
create the first Wild Buffalo sanctuary in the state...
